NL has a proud 150-year-old history of mining. Our advantages include ready access to North American and European commodity markets, a highly prospective geology, a diverse mineral base, modern road and port infrastructure, access to clean hydropower, and a stable regulatory framework in which to operate.
Our key commodities in production include iron ore, nickel, copper, cobalt, gold, pyrophyllite, limestone and dolomite. Mineral commodities with high potential for development include lithium, fluorspar, chromium, zinc, platinum group metals, and rare earth elements.
Access to Geoscience data : Natural Resources carries out impartial, state-of-the-art geoscientific investigations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to interpret and explain the province’s geological evolution and to describe, interpret, and explain the distribution, nature, quantity, and origin of the province’s mineral resources.
Junior Exploration Assistance Program: Provides funding for 40-75% of approved exploration cost, up to $150,000 or $225,000. (Region dependent) Matty Mitchell Prospectors Resource Room: Provides mentoring, technical support, and promotional assistance to more than 155 individual prospectors. The services offered by the Matty Mitchell resource room are free of charge to the public, as well as representatives from local and national exploration companies.
