The importance of indigenous relations

Mining Industry NL extends its deepest appreciation and respect to the Indigenous peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador. We recognize the invaluable contribution of Indigenous communities to our industry, as evidenced by the 18-25% representation in the mining workforce, which significantly surpasses the 8-9% Indigenous employment across other sectors in the province. Our members are deeply committed to fostering an ethos of engagement, collaboration, and the establishment of mutually-beneficial partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Furthermore, we would like to respectfully acknowledge this territory as the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk, and the island of Newfoundland as the ancestral territories of the Mi’kmaq and Beothuk. We also recognize and honour the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut and the Innu of Nitassinan, along with their ancestors, as the original inhabitants of Labrador. Our commitment goes beyond mere recognition; we genuinely aspire for respectful partnerships with all Indigenous communities of this province. Through collective efforts, we aim to promote healing, achieve true reconciliation, and together honour the beauty and richness of this land.
