Low carbon solutions

Mining plays a pivotal role in procuring essential minerals for a sustainable, low-carbon future. In addition to this crucial contribution, the industry is proactively taking measures to diminish its own carbon impact. Numerous mining entities have devised comprehensive strategies to reduce their carbon footprints.

Taking Vale as a case study illuminates the industry’s potential. As the operator of Voisey’s Bay nickel mine and a prominent figure in global mining, Vale showcases the ambitious trajectory companies can undertake. With a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Vale has charted a comprehensive approach. This includes transitioning from diesel to electricity where viable, achieving self-sufficiency through renewable energy, and committing to the restoration and preservation of 500,000 hectares of forest by 2030 to offset emissions. As part of its innovative endeavours, Vale is also in the process of building a pig iron plant that will leverage biocarbon, significantly diminishing its carbon emissions.
