James Powell

James holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of New Brunswick and a Master of Engineering (Mining) from McGill University. He is a professional engineer with over 25 years of technical and project management experience in mining, civil, geotechnical and environmental disciplines. James has over 18 years of increasing responsibility in senior leadership, in both consulting and mining team roles, and currently holds the role of Vice President, Regulatory and Government Affairs for Calibre's Valentine Gold Mine. James has served past terms on the Board of Mining Industry NL (and formerly the Chamber of Mineral Resources) and is a past-President of the NL Branch of CIM.
Graham Letto
Director, Mining NLGeneral Manager, Stakeholder Relations Tacora Resources Inc.
Graham Letto is currently General Manager, Stakeholder Relations at Tacora Resources, dealing mainly with all three levels of government, Indigenous groups, community organizations, and Environment. Having worked for 29 years with the Iron Ore company of Canada in management, Graham gained considerable experience in the mining sector. Graham also served on the Labrador City Town Council for 20 years, 8 of them as Mayor. He then went on to serve 4 years as MHA for the District of Labrador West, during which time he served as Parliamentary Assistant in the Department of Natural Resources and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment.
Lawrence Winter
Vice Chair, Mining NLVP Exploration, Altius Minerals
Lawrence holds B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. degrees from Memorial University and a Ph.D. from The University of British Columbia, is a registered Professional Geoscientist (PEGNL), and a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). He has worked in mineral exploration internationally and as Vice President Exploration is responsible for Altius’ project generation and marketing efforts both in Newfoundland and Labrador and globally. Lawrence has served on the board of the PDAC, as chair of the Technical Program committee for Mineral Resources Review, and currently sits on the board of the SEG Canada Foundation and the CIM NL Awards committee.
Joanne Sullivan
Director, Mining NLManager of Human Resources, Equinox Valentine Gold Mine
Born and raised in central NL, Joanne Sullivan has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Acadia University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Dalhousie University. Joanne is currently the Manager of Human Resources for Equinox Valentine Gold Mine. Prior to joining the mining sector, Joanne worked for 12 years in Human Resources in health care in NL and has served in a variety of HR leadership roles related to strategic human resources management, HR policy development and organizational employee experience.
Charlie Byrne
Director, Mining NLPrincipal Advisor, Communications & Government Relations, RIO Tinto IOC
Charlie leads Rio Tinto IOC’s engagement with external stakeholders, including industry, government, and media. Prior to joining Rio Tinto IOC, he worked as a consultant on numerous large conventional and renewable energy projects, where he supported external engagement and navigated complex regulatory environments. He also served as a special assistant to Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.
Charlie holds a Master of Public Relations from Mount Saint Vincent University, where his research focused on how media frame stories about natural resource development, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Memorial University.
Justin Hewitt
Director, Mining NLPartner, Stewart McKelvey
Justin Hewitt is a corporate lawyer in the St. John’s office of Stewart McKelvey. He has particular experience in the areas of mining and natural resources, real estate, and business and corporate finance. He also has experience in advising boards of directors of for-profit and not-for-profit corporations. In the mining space, Justin regularly acts for mining companies, exploration companies and prospectors on a wide range of commercial, corporate finance, land tenure and mineral rights matters. Justin holds a BA from Memorial University, a JD from the University of New Brunswick, and a Certificate in Mining Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University.
Jared Saunders
Director, Mining NLVP Sustainability, New Found Gold Corp.
Jared Saunders is Vice President of Sustainability at New Found Gold, where he leads environmental stewardship, regulatory affairs, and ESG initiatives across the organization. With more than 20 years of experience in environmental sciences and chemistry, Jared has held senior leadership roles in Newfoundland and Labrador’s mining sector, including managing environmental operations for Vale at Long Harbour and Voisey’s Bay. Jared holds a Ph.D. from the Royal Military College of Canada and is committed to advancing sustainable mining practices and fostering transparent, collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities, regulators, and stakeholders.
Alex Troake
Director, Mining NLChartering & Client Relations Desgagnés Atlantik
Based in St. John’s, Alex Troake manages client relationships and vessel chartering for Navigation Desgagnés, supporting projects in mining, energy and a range of other sectors. He develops transportation solutions for equipment, materials and project cargo, drawing on experience with dry bulk, breakbulk, general cargo, heavy lift and containerized cargo.
Known for a practical, collaborative approach, Alex works with ports, terminals, government and other partners to understand project needs and develop effective solutions. His experience in commercial development and stakeholder engagement helps build the relationships that support complex projects and supply chains.
Appointed to the Board of Mining Industry NL in October 2026, Alex brings a commercial, logistics and marine transportation perspective. He is pleased to contribute to the organization’s work and the continued growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s mineral resources sector.

With a distinguished career spanning over two decades, she is a transformative leader in the mining and minerals sectors, driving the strategic agenda of one of Newfoundland and Labrador's vital industries. McCallum has navigated through both private and public sectors, demonstrating proficiency across various aspects of the mining domain. Whether leading prospect generation and exploration initiatives or enhancing investment appeal, her versatile skill set epitomizes a steadfast dedication to driving industry progress.
Amanda is a graduate from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Bachelor of Education. McCallum further honed her acumen by earning a Masters Certificate in Project Management from Schulich School of Business, York University. Additionally, her credentials include completing the Directors Education Program, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
She is committed to engaging with Mining Industry NL’s membership, and stakeholders to foster and cultivate further growth in the minerals industry, looking for interconnectivity with other industries associations and creating interactions and opportunities building on strategic relationships with all industry partners and government departments.

With more than two decades of experience, Michael’s career spans across operations, business development, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and organizational development across multiple sectors, including mining, occupational health, energy, financial services and economic development.
Throughout his career, Michael has worked with organizations across Canada to strengthen operational performance, support growth initiatives, improve systems, processes and build strong relationships with industry, government and community stakeholders. His professional background includes leadership and senior roles with organizations such as Lifemark Health Group, TELUS Health, Horizon Occupational Health Solutions, Scotiabank, BDC and CIBC.
Michael has extensive experience supporting organizations through operational improvement initiatives, strategic planning processes, quality management systems, proposal development, partnership building, and stakeholder collaboration. He is particularly recognized for his process-driven approach, collaborative leadership style and ability to connect operational execution with broader organizational strategy.
At Mining Industry NL, Michael supports the organization’s operations, member services, industry engagement activities and strategic initiatives aimed at advancing Newfoundland and Labrador’s mineral resources sector.
Duane Smith
Manager of Learning Partnerships and Outreach
Having dedicated 31 years in our province’s education system, throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, Duane brings a strong passion for student learning and community engagement to this dynamic role. Now living in Gander, he has provided leadership in educational programming over 23 years serving as both a Director of Schools and as a Principal/Assistant Principal in four schools, spanning grades K-12, within the Central Region. As a teacher, Duane has taught science courses at both the intermediate and senior high levels and holds Master of Education (Teaching and Learning), Bachelor of Education (Secondary), and Bachelor of Physical Education degrees from Memorial University.
Duane’s extensive educational knowledge and experience, combined with his collaborative approach to building partnerships with community stakeholders, will be a definite asset to Mining Industry NL in developing and delivering our outreach and education programming.
Stephanie Rowe Slaney
Manager of Strategic Programs and Engagement
Stephanie brings extensive experience in education, community engagement and developing innovative learning experiences. She holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Studies from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Throughout her career, Stephanie has collaborated with students, educators, community partners and diverse audiences across Canada to design and deliver inclusive, experiential learning programs and outreach initiatives. Her expertise in program development and inquiry-based engagement bridges organizational priorities with meaningful community impact.
In her role with Mining Industry NL, Stephanie will support advancing the province’s mining sector by leading strategic programs and engagement initiatives that promote understanding, strengthen partnerships and highlight the mineral industry’s contributions to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economic and social development.
